AAPOR 80th Annual Conference

Challenge: The University of Washington (UW) is poised for significant growth, with a projected 20% increase in campus population and the development of 6 million new gross square feet. This expansion comes with a mandate from the City of Seattle: reduce single occupancy vehicle (SOV) rates among commuters to 12% by 2028 and decrease motor vehicle parking spaces by 25%.
Solution: UW has partnered with ReconMR to conduct comprehensive campus transportation surveys. These studies track commute behaviors and delve into the motivations and barriers faced by commuters when choosing their mode of transportation.
Results: As of January 2024, UW has seen a slight decrease in drive-alone trips, which now constitute 16% of the commute. However, to achieve the ambitious 12% target, UW has expanded its research efforts, engaging in quantitative follow-ups and establishing a custom community of commuters. This community participates in qualitative activities, providing valuable insights into alternative commute modes like vanpool and bike-share.
Impact: This ongoing research is crucial for UW to meet its sustainability goals, ensuring a greener future while accommodating its growing academic community.
