Data Collection and Insights Team Y. Patrick Hsieh, Ph.D. Principal Research Scientist

Y. Patrick Hsieh, Ph.D. serves as ReconMR’s Principal Research Scientist, bringing more than a decade of experience leading mixed-methods research and translating complex data into actionable insights. His focus is on survey methodology, usability research, and behavioral analysis to improve how organizations design surveys, digital systems, and data products. In his role, Patrick provides strategic guidance on research design and implementation, supporting senior leadership in proposal development and helping clients uncover meaningful insights that inform decision-making.

Before beginning his career at ReconMR, Patrick spent over ten years at RTI International, where he led research programs for major federal clients including the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES). He directed multidisciplinary teams conducting cognitive interviews, usability testing, focus groups, and large-scale survey experiments to improve questionnaire design and data systems. His work has produced evidence-based recommendations that enhanced survey efficiency and respondent engagement.

Patrick holds a Ph.D. in Media, Technology & Society from Northwestern University and an M.A. in Sociology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is active in the research community, supporting the American Association for Public Opinion Research in a volunteer capacity, and currently serves as the Past President of the Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research, coordinating fundraising efforts to support the regional chapter.
